Etymology: Old word for `small cattle', which is well attested in Celtic, e.g. OIr. mil n. `small animal', and is sporadically found also in Westgerm., e.g. in OLFranc. māla `cow', Dutch maal `young cow' (here also the old name of the Harz, Μηλί-βοκον ὄρος?). -- Against these words, which all can go back on IE * mēlo-, stands with a-vowel Arm. mal `sheep', also SmRuss. mal' f. `small cattle, young sheep', Russ. (Crimea) malíč `kind of Crimea-sheep'. It eems obvious to sonnect these words with the general Slav. adj. for `small', e.g. OCS malъ, Russ. mályj. A further step leads to the Germ. word for `small, narrow' in Goth. smals etc., which is often used of small cattle, e.g. OWNo. smale m. `small animal', OHG smalaz fihu ' Schmal- vieh, small cattle'. If we posit IE *( s)mēl-, ( s)mōl- (OCS malь etc.), ( s)mǝl- (Arm. mal, Goth. smals etc.)[this means * smHlo-?], it would seem possible, to bring all words mentioned together. [For Arm. mal Ačar̄yan HAB III²224 proposes a loan from Arabic.] All this does not lead to a probable solution. -- Fick 1, 519, however, thinks for the μῆλον-group of * mē- `bleat' (s. μηκάομαι). -- Cf. He was tetrarch of Gaulanitis, Trachonitis, Auranitis, Batanea and Panias (so Joseph., if the indications he gives in var. passages may thus be brought together), and acc. to Lk 3:1, also Iturea (all small districts northeast of Palestine). He rebuilt Panias as Caesarea (Philippi) and Bethsaida as Julias. Joseph. praises his personality and administration (Ant. 18, 106f). He was married to Salome, the daughter of Herodias (s. Ἡρωδιάς and Σαλώμη, end). He died 33/34 A.D., whereupon his territory was joined to the Rom. province of Syria, though only for a short time. Mt 16:13; Mk 8:27. Some think that this Philip is erroneously implied Mt 14:3; Mk 6:17; Lk 3:19 v.l.; s. 2 below.—Schürer I 336–40.

② The Philip mentioned Mt 14:3 and Mk 6:17 is associated by some scholars with a half-brother of Herod Antipas (s. Ἡρῳδιάς), but the identification is not otherwise attested.

③ the apostle, one of the Twelve. In the lists of the Twelve (which is the only place where his name is mentioned in the synoptics and Ac), he is found in fifth place, after the two pairs of brothers Peter-Andrew, James-John Mt 10:3; Mk 3:18; Lk 6:14; Ac 1:13. He is given more prominence in J, where he is one of the first to be called, and comes fr. Bethsaida, the city of Simon and Andrew; cp. 1:43–46, 48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8f. Papias (2:4): one of the πρεσβύτεροι.—On the apostle and the evangelist (s. 4 below), who have oft. been confused, s. TZahn, Apostel u. Apostelschüler in der Provinz Asien: Forsch. φυλακτήριον, ου, τό (φύλαξ, cp. φυλάσσω; Hdt.+; TestJob 47:11; Jos., Ant. 15, 249; Just., D. 46, 5; in var. senses) leather prayer band and case containing scripture passages, sometimes used as an amulet, prayer-band, prayer-case. One of the lit. senses of φ., which occurs only once in our lit., Mt 23:5, is ‘safeguard, means of protection’ (Demosth. 6, 24; Philo), esp. ‘amulet’, (Dioscor., Mat. Med. 5, 154; Plut., Mor. 377b al.; OGI 90, 45; PGM 1, 275; 3, 97; 127; 4, 86; 660; 708; 1071; 2506; 2510; 2694; 2705; 13, 796), but this sense is only one component of a more complex semantic phenomenon, where the referent reflects the Aramaic תְפִלִּין, i.e. two black leather boxes containing scripture passages worn on the forehead and the left arm, in keeping with Mosaic instruction Ex 13:9, 16; Dt 6:8; 11:18, where the directives appear to be figurative. Discovery of such small boxes, some with compartments, at the caves of Murabbaat, further confirms literary evidence of the practice. H ACCENTUATION. οὐ is oxytone acc. to Hdn.Gr.1.494 (text doubtfulin 504): Arist.SE 166b6, referring to Il.23.328 τὸ μὲν ου (i.e. οὐ = οὒ) καταπύθεται ὄμβρῳ, says λύουσι.. τῇ προσῳδίᾳ λέγοντες τὸ ου ὀξύτερον (i.e. οὗ), cf. 178b3. In codd. the word is written oxytone when folld. by a pause (v. supr. B), and is usu. written without any accent in other cases.

Etymology: The forms, both the verbal and the nominal, go back on a λάμπω (Schwyzer 692). - Withou nasalwe find in Hitt. lap-zi `glow', lap-nu-zi `bring in glow, kindle' (MudgeLang. 7, 252, Benveniste BSL 33, 140). Further, with long vowel, IE. * lāp- or * lōp-, some Baltic words for `torch, flame': Lith. lópė, Latv. lāpa, OPruss. lopis; with short a-vowel, but deviating in auslaut, Celt., OIr. lassaim `flame', Welsh llachar `glow', which can go back on * laps-. - Further combinations in Bq and WP. 2, 383; also Fraenkel Wb. s. lópė. Cf. also λοφνίς. It is doubtful whether this material proves IE origin. On λαμψάνη s. v., id. λοφνίς. Are λαμπ-ηδών, λαμπ-υρίς Greek? A nasal present is also difficult (* lh₂mp-?).

Etymology: The system ὀφλεῖν: ὀφλισκ-άνω: ὀφλήσω: ὤφληκα agrees with (except for the enlarging - άνω; Schwyzer 700) the group εὑρεῖν: εὑρίσκω, εὑρήσω, εὕρηκα; to this came the aorist ὀφλῆσαι (Lys. a. late); also [Ϝο]φλέ-ασι has the same enlarged zero grade without second. κ. Beside this system built on a zero grade themat. aorist stands another, based on the full grade aorist ὤφελον, to which came the nasal present *ὀφέλ-νω ( \> ὀφείλω, ὀφέλλω, ὀφήλω) like ἔτεμον: τέμνω. As the formation of the present ὀφείλω became unclear through the phonetic development, it could become the basis of another system. Also semantically the formal pairs went different ways. -- An old problem provides Ϝο- which appears only in an Arc. inscription. While some, e.g. Brugmann IF 29, 241 (cf. on οἴγνυμι), want to see in it a prefix (to Lat. au-, vē-, Skt. áva `away (from)'; diff. Vollgraff Mél. Bq 2, 339), others are inclined, e.g. Solmsen KZ 34, 450f., Fraenkel Phil. 97, 162, to see Ϝο- as reversed writing for ὀ- (further in Schwyzer 226 n. 1). -- Further quite isolated and dark; an attempt to connect ὀφείλω etc. with ὀφέλλω `augment' in v. Etymology: No agreement outside Greek. Formally agree except for the vowellength some Germ. words, e.g. MHG spīl m. `point of a spear', NHG dial. Speil `chip, splitter', MLG NLG. spīle `broach'. Besides in the north shortvowel forms, e.g. OWNo. spila f. `thin and small piece of wood'. Balt. word that belong here, e.g. Latv. spīle `fork, pin', Lith. spylỹs m. `spike, prickle', are suspect of being, like Čech. spíle `pin', Pol. spila `spear', loans from German or at least to have been influenced by German; s. Fraenkel s. spielóti. (On ἄσπιλος χείμαρρος see σπιλάς 1.) -- (As further cognates with varying final consonants are adduced: with r e.g. MLG spīr `point of germ, grass, tower', with k Lat. spīca `ear (of corn)', with n Lat. spīna `thorn' etc. etc.; all put together under * spei- `point, pointed piece of wood' in WP. 2, 653ff. (after Persson Beitr. 1, 397ff. a. o.) and Pok. 981. It seems quite doubtful to me that these words have enything to do with the Greek word.)
